Washington and Lee law professor Jim Moliterno recently returned from the Czech Republic and Slovakia where he spent several days speaking with lawyers, judges, and educators about the legal profession.
Professor Moliterno’s engagements included:
- A two-day lawyer ethics course at Masaryk University in Brno Czech Republic (November 23-24) for forty student participants.
- A public forum titled “When Lawyers Lie in Court” with a Czech judge and prosecutor in Brno on November 23rd.
- Workshops at Charles University in Prague on November 27th on “Teaching Millennials” and an interactive session on teaching methods.
- On November 27th, the Prague law firm of Havel Holasek and Partners hosted a celebration for the publication of Professor Moliterno’s book, Global Issues in Legal Ethics in the Czech language. The book is now available in English, Chinese, Georgian and Czech. It is the first book on lawyer ethics in the Czech language.
- Presentation at Palacky University Law Faculty on November 29th in Olomouc, Czech Republic on “Publishing in U.S. Law Journals.”
- On November 30th in Bratislava, Slovakia, Professor Moliterno met with the U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia, Adam Sterling, to discuss his work over the past five years with Slovak judges, prosecutors and law faculties.
- Presentation at the Comenius University Law Faculty on November 30th to discuss “Judicial Systems and Structures for the Avoidance of Impartiality Threats.”
- On December 1st in Bratislava, Professor Moliterno met with the Deputy Chief Prosecutor and the Chairman of the Ethics Commission of the Slovak State Prosecution Service. The Code of Conduct for Prosecutors that established the existence of the Ethics Commission was drafted with Moliterno’s consultation during 2014 and 2015 and was adopted in 2016.
- Also on December 1st, Professor Moliterno met with a group of judges called “For Open Judiciary” to discuss the advancement of anti-corruption and public trust measures for the Slovak judiciary.
